Dragon Rock

Perhaps the most quirky and charming of our properties, Dragon Rock perches amidst mountain rocks facing out over a picturesque riverbed and the distant plains. Two bedrooms accommodate up to four guests in comfort and style, while a cozy veranda - complete with outdoor double bed for those beautiful crisp and starry nights - opens up onto a large wooden deck containing a sparkling plunge pool and adjacent wood-fired hot pool for those colder days and nights. On the Eastern side of the house is a built-in braai and seating area.

With a central open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area flanked on either side by bedrooms and bathroom - itself with a door leading to a stunning outdoor shower area - Dragon Rock offers a compact yet spacious living space with fantastic indoor-outdoor flow. An outside bath, nestled against the rocks, allows for romantic moonlit bathing. The heated pool requires prior notice of intended use since it takes quite a few hours to warm the water the old fashioned way and we need to get the wood-stove going long before our lucky guests arrive. But all who stay at Dragon Rock will agree that one of life's most utterly pleasurable experiences is to relax, post-arrival from the city and glass in hand, in a heated pool under the immense beauty of the Tankwa night sky.

Checks ALL the boxes! We had the amazing privilege to stay at Tierkloof's Dragon Rock cottage for 3 nights in July, and were totally blown away. We expected to like it, but fell head-over-heels in love. Those views! They stretch so far, it feels like you can look into your future.

As a passionate traveller and co-owner of The Travel Cafe Cape Town, a boutique travel company, we get to stay in hundreds of guesthouses and hotels - but what Elsa and Robin have created is pure magic. It checks every box we find important: Stylish, comfortable, super well equipped, cozy, fast wifi, romantic, amazing ambiance, hot tub, cold pool, outside bath, open-air shower, topnotch fireplace, nice walking trails.... And have I mentioned the insane views?

If you are sitting on the fence about whether you should book, just do it. Even if you struggle to find space, because we have no doubt this gem is going to fill up fast. It is totally worth the wait. Your only regret may be that you couldn't stay longer. Thanks for creating this little piece of heaven Robin and Elsa, we LOVED it so much.

Heaven on earth. "Be still my beating heart, no seriously, shut up! Tucked away in a corner of the Tankwa Karoo, just past the turnoff for Fokallville, you will find Tierkloof. It’s there that you will find a silence that is so loud, it makes your ears ring.
There are 3 different houses all far apart from each other that you can walk around naked if you so choose. The accommodation is definitely upmarket, in fact, if I were to have my own holiday home in the middle of nowhere, this is pretty much how I would want it.
What surprised me was the level of attention that had been taken. You could be excused for expecting things like wood and firelighters, ice and toiletry amenities. But it’s when I needed some tin foil and found an industrial size roll, or wanted something to dress my salad and found a small tin of Prince Albert extra virgin olive oil available, it’s then that you understand the difference that passion can make to your experience.
Our teenage kids were dreading the idea of “a shack with solar power”, but from the moment we walked in and found all the soft lights going, the hot tub warmed up, we were all blown away. The kids were thrilled with the WiFi, but also found so much more to do. We were lucky to go in spring and experience the wild flowers in bloom. Tierkloof is whatever you want it to be: outdoor activities, braai by the pool, sleeping on the day bed, playing games or reading a book, you can choose. But whatever you do, your spirit will be restored."

Absolutely beautiful part of the world, pristine and untarnished. The terrain, the quietness, the endless views and big, big skies are only matched by the excellence of the accommodation and the quality of the hosts, Robin and Elsa. As a keen mountain biker and hiker with a penchant for leaving the crowds way behind, this is simply bloody heaven. The perfect refuge from the pressures of an urban existence (and at just two hours away from Cape Town, easy to get to there after work on a Friday for a full weekend's stay). My only, somewhat selfish concern is that this hitherto hidden gem gets properly discovered!

WOW! Tierkloof Mountain Cottages gets my thumbs for favourite self-catering spot in SA! Weekend of complete bliss! Elsa and Robin have created pure magic ...beautiful off grid simple luxury cottages each with their own unique fingerprint.. Endless soulful vistas, deep pockets of comfort to curl up, thoughtful touches, sip and savour quiet star filled nights. Our experience of this recently launched perfectly peaceful spot, a deep treat. We salute you both for the courage to follow your dreams, relocate from CT and breathe life into this piece of paradise. By far one of the most beautiful locations to stay at, you can see the owners thought of every little detail. The views during the day or the stars at night really exceeds your expectations. Robin and Elsa make sure that there is everything you need and will help you in any possible way. We only stayed for 2 nights but recommend to stay there longer, because once you are there you never want to leave.

Amazing Amazing Amazing. I have travelled and stayed at many properties around the world and can honestly say that Dragon Rock is one of the best. The location is remote and amazing. The views are stunning. And the cottage is incredible. Attention to detail is second to none and the cottage provides an oasis of luxury and comfort in a aread of wilderness. Everything has been thought of meticulously and provided in spades. The welcome was warm and honest and a greeting of two people totally proud of the beautiful property they have created. I was tempted not to leave a review as this is one place I would like to keep to myself and to return time and time again but sometimes you have to share these rare special retreats.
